Learning Ordinal Numbers the Fun Way!

Last week, we had our sports day. I participated in the race and I won. When the sports day event was about to end. All winners were called in the front and were given medals and certificates.

I came back home with my parents. I excitedly called my friends and told them that I came one in the race. My mother pointed out that I was using the wrong word. I came first in the race is the right word we use in this case. I got confused and asked her why the use of the word ‘one’ is wrong. She brought my Musky kit and spread the mat. It had written Ordinal Numbers on it.

What are ordinal numbers I asked my mother? She said the ordinal numbers are the numbers that are used to represent the rank or position of an object or a person. She told me that they are also referred to as positioning or ranking numbers.

We started playing with Musky. My mother asked me to make Musky bot move to the fourth block. She started explaining me that the numbers 1st (first), 2nd (second), 3rd (third), 4th (fourth), 5th (fifth), 6th (sixth), 7th (seventh), 8th (eighth), 9th (ninth) and 10th (tenth) tell us about the positions of various floors in the building. Therefore, all of them are the ordinal numbers.

I suddenly made Musky move to the first block and said, Mumma I came first in the race! She patted my back and said yes, that’s the right way to talk about position or rank. We continued playing and I learnt a lot about different ordinal numbers.

Teachers Note

In the classroom setting, the teacher can show an ordinal number mat to kids. The teacher can then ask the students to identify the ordinal numbers for each number. The teacher can also ask the students to write down the ordinal numbers for each number. Students can be provided with a worksheet that has a series of numbers. The students can then have to identify the ordinal numbers for each number and write it down.

Also, small rewards like candies can be given to children to boost a sense of achievement when they identify the correct number and move Musky to it.
